AER 2019 is a series of roundtables on arts pedagogy that brings together experts from the fields of art history, art criticism, curation, pedagogy, film making, literature, activism, policy making, performing arts and education.These roundtables held across the country will lead to an Annual Art Education Summit in New Delhi held in the memory of noted artist and pedagogue, Tushar Joag (1966 -2018). The AER takes its inspiration from Joag’s passionate advocacy for art education as an integral part in the holistic development of children and youth.

Panel I: Mapping the History of Art Education in Northeast India
This panel will map the history and development of art education in Northeast India, with a focus on its modernisms against a backdrop of its social, political and cultural history. It will also focus on contemporary practices in relation to art education, and modes of dissemination, exchange and implementation.

This panel will contextualize how tradition can function as the raw material for contemporaneity, and how the zones of contact between cultures in Northeast India have led to a production and exchange of visual and intellectual histories. What can art education do to bring forth these histories into the curriculum level for shared meanings in a globalized era?

Panel III: Institutions, Infrastructure, Policy and Publishing in developing Art Education
This panel will focus on the role of institutions and cultural policy to shape the infrastructure required to develop a robust art education sector, beyond existing colonial models. Alongside, national and regional art publishing (both English and regional languages) will be discussed to help shape policy to develop a plural understanding of art education that involves local needs.

Art Integration is a form of teaching where art is the core of learning, through which students can understand other subjects, or the applicability of visual thinking in related curricula. This panel will explore the existing practices of teaching and learning, and formulate how these approaches can be made more participatory, interactive and experiential for the curriculum.
